GM and Honda have announced that they are partnering to build affordable electric vehicles as part of a plan to pass Tesla in EV sales. This includes plans for compact crossover vehicles and a fleet of options ranging in size.

The cars, which reportedly will sell for less than $30,000, will be built with GM’s Ultium battery technology, and the two companies said that to continue to drive down costs, they will talk about future collaborations on battery tech. Both companies have set carbon neutrality goals, with GM aiming to achieve net zero in its products and operations by 2040, and Honda hoping to reach it globally by 2050. GM also has a U.S. goal to get rid of light-duty vehicles’ tailpipe emissions by 2035.

“We have a very important goal ... that by mid-decade, by 2025, we'll sell more EVs in the U.S. than anyone else, and to do that, you need to have a portfolio of vehicles,” said GM CEO Mary Barra at an Axios event. “We definitely can scale and can do it quickly.”
