Here Are All The U.S. Abortion Laws By State

Accessing abortion is a constitutional right because of Roe v. Wade—but some states have implemented restrictions that limit that access.

When the ruling of Roe v. Wade went into effect in 1973, it changed women’s healthcare and made abortion access a constitutional right. Before the federal court case, 1 in 6 pregnancy-related deaths were caused by illegal, unsafe abortions.

The case opened up many doors to safe access—but ever since then, some state governments have tried to subvert it by introducing restrictions like unconstitutional abortions bans, unnecessary waiting periods, and Targeted Restrictions on Abortion Providers (TRAP) laws. These laws are often unnecessary criteria like length and width of hallways, or practicing requirements for medical professionals.

24 states have TRAP laws in place, which impose specific requirements on clinics and staff to be able to perform abortions. A lot of these laws are being passed in an effort to undermine Roe v. Wade and cause clinics to shut down without technically being deemed unconstitutional.

This list offers a brief overview of how each state classifies in terms of abortion— ranking from accessible to severely restricted.
