28-Year-Old Atatiana Jefferson Shot and Killed By Police Officer

28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson was shot and killed in her home by a police officer—now her family is demanding justice.

A woman was reportedly shot and killed in her home by a Texas police officer.

28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson was struck and killed by a bullet shot through her window by the police. Officers say they found a firearm in her bedroom, but it’s unclear if Jefferson was holding the gun when she was shot.

According to the Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD), officers were responding to a call about a home with its front door open at 2:25 am on October 12. They searched the perimeter of the house and “observed a person standing inside the residence near a window.” The officer fired a shot through the window, after “perceiving a threat,” and hit Jefferson. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The body cam footage ends after a shot was fired.

The Jefferson family’s lawyer S. Lee Merritt says Jefferson was playing video games with her eight-year-old nephew at the time of the incident. Jefferson’s neighbor James Smith says he had alerted police earlier that morning to check on her when he saw her house doors open and the lights on.

“They tell you, ‘If you see something, say something.’” he told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “…Well, if you do that and it costs somebody to lose their life, it makes you not want to do that.”

The incident happened just several days after former Dallas officer Amber Guyger was sentenced for the murder of Botham Jean. Relatives and their supporters are now demanding answers and accountability from the FWPD.

"We lost her for no reason," Jefferson’s stepmother Noella Jefferson told KTVT. "We've seen many cases like this, where you think someone had learned from it. But we think there's a low learning curve here for the police department, and we need to see how can we make it better."

The FWPD says the officer, who has been with the department since April 2018, has resigned from the police force. A full version of their body cam footage has yet to be released.
