Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) offered her opinion in response to the fraught relationship between Spotify and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who have a multi-year contract with Spotify and have cited concerns about Joe Rogan’s podcast and other forms of misinformation on the music and podcast platform.

The couple’s Archewell Productions recently released a statement regarding the current controversy: “Last April, our co-founders began expressing concerns to our partners at Spotify about the all too real consequences of COVID-19 misinformation on its platform. We have continued to express our concerns to Spotify to ensure changes to its platform are made to help address this public health crisis. We look to Spotify to meet this moment and are committed to continuing our work together as it does.”

Boebert attempted to fire back at Harry and Meghan over the statement, tweeting on Jan 30, “We gave our final response to the Royal Family’s opinions in 1776 … and we care even less what the Royal Rejects have to say.”

The Colorado representative’s take lands oddly for several reasons. Firstly, Harry and Meghan, rather than being “rejected” from the British royal family, chose to willingly step down from their royal duties. Secondly, Meghan is an American citizen, with each of her children holding dual citizenship in the UK and the U.S. Others critiqued Boebert’s response online, calling her out for promoting the dissemination of COVID-19 misinformation.

Boebert made headlines in December for making an Islamaphobic and racist joke during a November House floor debate, calling Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) a member of the “jihad squad,” her derogatory term for the ‘“squad” of progressive Democrat lawmakers.

Rep. Omar aired a death threat she received during a press conference about anti-Islamophobia, which came after Rep. Boebert’s anti-Muslim remarks.
