It’s Gritty’s election now.

As Americans held their breath waiting on Nevada to hurry up counting the ballots and  gasping when historically Republican Georgia narrowly turned blue, Pennsylvania took a turn early Friday in favor of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

Mail-in ballots from Pennsylvania’s largest city, Philadelphia, pushed Biden in the lead over President Trump, further tightening the race. While Biden leads by just over 13,000 votes, per the New York Times, election officials are counting more than 100,000 remaining ballots.

Biden campaigned heavily in Pennsylvania, where he grew up in the northeastern city of Scranton. Biden’s wife Jill, a teacher, also grew up in Philadelphia. He spent more than 30 years as a Democratic senator in Delaware, but has jokingly called himself the “third senator” from Pennsylvania, the Times reported.

While the orange creature usually acts as the official mascot of the Philadelphia Flyers, the city’s NHL team, Gritty quickly became a symbol of the 2020 election. (Gritty is no stranger to politics, after all, he’s been sort of adopted as a progressive meme — an orange foil to Pepe the Frog.)
