Mysterious Red Glow Over the Pacific Ocean Is Straight Out of “Stranger Things”

The eerie images were taken by pilot Dustin Maggard at a distance of nearly 31,000 ft in the air.

A now-viral Reddit thread shows photos of three red, glowing lights peaking through clouds directly above the Pacific Ocean.

The eerie images were taken by pilot Dustin Maggard at a distance of nearly 31,000 ft in the air. “We had no idea what we were looking at. We were making jokes about being in the middle of some sort of military exercise or some sort of alien invasion,” Maggard later told CNN.

As soon as the photos were posted, Reddit commenters had a field day proposing their own theories; some guessed it was UFOs, while others likened the glow to the portal to the Upside Down in “Stranger Things.

Niel Jacobs, a weather modeling expert, might ultimately have the right answer. He told CNN that the glowing spots were caused by commercial fishing vessels that had been using bright-red LED lights to capture saury, a type of mackerel fish, and even had geographic data from GlobalFishingWatch.org to prove it.
