Nike’s New Swimwear Line Includes Hijab
The line was created for women “who don’t want to choose between modesty and movement with comfort and confidence.”
Nike announced its new Victory Swim Collection on Tuesday—and it includes a full coverage swimsuit and a swim hijab.
“As designers continued learning from athletes across diverse communities, they saw a striking gap in apparel for water sports — specifically, a lack of options for female athletes who don’t want to choose between modesty and movement with comfort and confidence,” Nike explained in the announcement.
To combat the problem, they created their Full-Coverage Swimsuit, Nike Victory Swim Tunic Top, Swim Leggings, and The Swim Hijab with warp-knit fabric. The pieces have a “streamlined yet modest silhouette” that allow wearers speed in the water without cling.
Nike explained it took design inspiration from athletes like Emirati figure skater Zahra Lari, who was the first in her sport to wear a hijab in competition.
In 2017, Nike launched its Pro Hijab, making the sportswear brand significantly more inclusive. And though Muslim women were the primary focus group for their new Victory Swim Collection, Nike said the full-coverage swimwear can also be worn by women wanting more sun protection at the beach, or who just generally want to wear a more modest swimsuit.
The swimwear line will be available on February 1.
