Groundhog Day arrived, as it always does, on February 2, with a rodent named Punxsutawney Phil being pried from the ground and displayed on national television to predict the upcoming weather. This year, Phil predicted there will be six more weeks of winter. Not cool, Phil.

Odd American tradition aside, the internet typically references the popular 1993 film “Groundhog Day” during this annual ritual. The movie follows a man played by Bill Murray who keeps reliving the same day over and over again (Sound familiar?). But this year, the jokes took a bleak and prescient turn, as many people recognized that we’ve been living our own version of “Groundhog Day” because of the COVID-19 pandemic — which has forced people to stay inside and away from other people for nearly a year.
