Prince Harry spoke publicly for the first time about his and Meghan Markle’s decision to step back from their royal duties.

During a private charity dinner in London on Sunday, Harry stated that the choice to pull back from their senior roles was his and “not one [he] made lightly.”

“I hope that helps you understand what it had to come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known, to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life,” Harry said.

The Duke and Duchess announced their unprecedented step back from the Royal family earlier this month, expressing their intention to become financially independent and to split time between North America and the UK. Markle has been in Canada with Harry and their son, Archie, for the last few months.

Harry added their decision to split time between the two continents was to “enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”

Last week, Queen Elizabeth II released a statement about reaching an agreement with Harry, saying there would be “a period of transition.”

“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,” the Queen’s statement read. “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”

The couple has repeatedly cited their battles with British tabloids, some of which have even led them to pursue legal action. Markle publicly spoke about the effects of the media on her well-being in an interview with ITV.

In her statement, the Queen acknowledged the couple’s issues with the tabloids constant harassment saying, “I recognize the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”

Harry has also reflected on painful memories of his late mother, Princess Diana, who was relentlessly followed by photographers and reporters after she married into the royal family. Diana was tragically killed in a car crash after being followed by photographers in Paris. Harry has said that he will “not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum.”
