Remote Employees Are Secretly Working Two Jobs At Once With The Help Of This Website

A report in the Wall Street Journal revealed a group of people who have taken advantage of remote employment by working two full-time jobs at once.

A small pool of workers are reportedly gaming the system by taking advantage of remote work and secretly working two full-time jobs — and a website is helping those employees navigate both.

Overemployed was created in April and is a website and community dedicated to white-collar workers who want to “earn extra income and achieve financial freedom” while also being “free from office politics and layoffs.” The organization’s founder, who goes by Isaac, wrote on the website that they were inspired to start the community after being denied a promotion at their current job and being offered another opportunity.

“I decided to stay on at my old job while starting my new job, overlapping two jobs as a hedge against uncertainty during the pandemic,” Isaac continued. “But more than anything else, I wanted to organize a community to give the man, aka Corporate America, the middle finger for always trying to screw the little people over.”

Isaac writes that they’ve managed to maintain a 40-hour workweek while making more than $300,000 of additional income this year — “income I’d have forgone had I simply quit my job,” Isaac said.

The website helps those who want to pursue a second remote job by publishing articles and a newsletter that gives tips and tricks to keep both jobs. In one blog post called “12 Rules for working two remote jobs (WFH),” the writer tells people not to discuss their two jobs, have a clear goal in mind, and to “be average.”

“Don’t cause attention. Try not to be recognized. Don’t add more work for yourself,” the blog continues.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced millions of people out of their jobs and caused economic stress due to the global shutdowns. As the vaccinations began rolling out and businesses started to reopen again, many industries have struggled to hire or retain employees due to low wages and poor benefits.

In a wide-ranging report from the Wall Street Journal, some employees were motivated to earn more with a second job because their main job wasn’t giving them enough or asking for too much. Some workers who have two full-time jobs told the Journal that they don’t work much more than 40 hours a week, while others say they work up to 100 hours a week.

The employees said they use certain tactics to stay organized including multiple laptops and screens, color-coded browsers to keep track of which job they’re currently focusing on, and using paid time off when one job is more demanding at any given time.

“Am I trying to be, like, a five-star employee?” an anonymous woman who works in insurance and telecommunications told the Journal. “Not really. I’m just trying to do the job I need to not get fired.”

According to the report, two full-time jobs don’t violate any federal or state laws but could go against any non-compete clauses within an employment contract that could get a person in trouble.

One employee said balancing two jobs can be overwhelming, but receiving multiple paychecks is worth the risk and stress.

Since the Wall Street Journal report was published, Overemployed has reportedly doubled its community members.
