This Man Was Doused with Battery Acid in a Racist, Anti-Immigrant Attack

The man said his attacker asked him, “Why did you come here and invade my country?”

A U.S. citizen from Peru was attacked with battery acid by someone accusing him of “invading” the country.
Mahud Villalaz was attacked on Friday night after a man confronted him for how he parked his car and accused him of being an illegal immigrant. He said his attacker asked him, “Why did you come here and invade my country?”
Villalaz, 42, is a legal citizen who immigrated from Peru.
Surveillance footage shows Villalaz parking his truck outside La Sierrita Restaurant in Milwaukee, WI. He says the man told him he was parked illegally. After Villalaz moved his car, the man began to confront him about being in the U.S. illegally. The man then tossed acid at him, covering the left side of his face, and Villalaz ran into the restaurant for help.

"He came inside screaming and asking for help," said Brenda Hernandez, a waitress who was working that night. "We didn't see what had happened because we were working. When he came in we did everything we could do to help wash his face.
Villalaz suffered second-degree burns on his face. He was treated and released from a hospital. Milwaukee police have arrested a 61-year-old-white man suspected of the attack, which is being investigated as a hate crime.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for Villalaz’s medical bills and other expenses. As of Tuesday, the page has raised over $39,000.
