Over the years, many “Scooby-Doo” fans have speculated that Mystery Inc. member Velma might be part of the LGBTQ+ community and — jinkies! — that mystery is now officially solved.

The upcoming Halloween special “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” will acknowledge the character’s sexual orientation for the first time on screen. A viral clip from the film, which shows Velma blushing over another woman character, Coco Diablo, started making the rounds on social media as of October 4.

“Who am I kidding? I’m crushing big time Daphne,” Velma says to Daphne at one point. “What do I do? What do I say?”

Filmmaker James Gunn, who wrote the 2002 live-action “Scooby Doo” movie and its 2004 sequel, tweeted in 2020 that he had attempted to explicitly portray Velma as an out lesbian in those films, but claimed “the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
