A rare fin whale was spotted by Spanish officials off the coast of Cullera earlier this month, showing signs of an injured spine.

Fin whales, which are second only to blue whales in size of any whale species, are endangered. According to the WWF, sightings of fin whales by humans are extremely rare.

Biologists and veterinarians examined the male whale, which measured in at 40 tons and 55 feet in length. Though they did determine the animal had “a serious deviation” in its spine, the cause of the injury is not clear.
