Rainbow Railroad provides information, support, and travel to LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing persecution and endangerment in their home countries.

“At any given time, Rainbow Railroad is working on 30-50 open cases, confirming their details, putting them in touch with local resources and helping them identify safe routes for escape,” they explain on their website. “As the situation worsens in many parts of the world, these numbers continue to grow.”

Persecuted people from around the world send the organization requests telling their stories in the hopes of being brought to safety and freedom. Many say they have been beaten, abused, and ostracized because of their sexuality or identity. For many, homosexuality is considered a crime in the country they call home.

Once Rainbow Railroad can identify and authenticate a request for help, they work to provide routes to safety and resources for seeking asylum, along with moral/financial support if funds permit. In addition to donating, interested parties can host events on the organization’s behalf to raise awareness, sponsor a specific case, or volunteer their specific skill sets to help their cause.

In 2017, the organization received 1,151 requests for help, and they reported assisting to save 206 lives that year. They also connect the people they support to other organizations that can help support them through their asylum claim and settlement. On their website, they claim that every person they’ve helped with travel support to date has been able to claim asylum in a safe country.
