Trump Caught on Camera Pretending to Conduct Band During National Anthem
The president has chided others in the past to “stand proudly” for the national anthem.
During the national anthem at his own Super Bowl watch party on Sunday, President Trump did almost everything except stand respectfully with his hand over his heart.
A video posted to an Instagram story showed Trump and his family at the president’s party at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. While the national anthem played, Trump could be seen greeting guests, adjusting his chair, and straightening his suit jacket, while other attendees, including first lady Melanie Trump, stood with their hands over their hearts. During a crescendo, he even pretended to conduct an orchestra.
The footage was first reported by the Miami Herald. It was reportedly filmed and posted by a real-estate agent for a Russian-American company.
President Trump has chided athletes like former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the past for kneeling in protest during the national anthem.
"You have to stand proudly for the national anthem, or you shouldn't be playing, you shouldn’t be there,” Trump said during a 2018 “Fox and Friends” interview. “Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country."
Several lawmakers, including Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), called out Trump for what was caught on camera.
“Our troops are worthy of a commander-in-chief who respects them,” he tweeted on Monday. “Instead, they’re being led by a self-centered man-child.”
