Nonprofit Uses Donated Hair to Soak Up Oil Spills
This nonprofit creates hair mats that soak up oil spills — here’s how your luscious locks can help keep the planet clean.
According to Statista, there were approximately 1,000 metric tons of oil lost into the environment from oil tanker spills alone in 2020. That’s not even counting the other ways in which the fossil fuel gets into the environment. Oil spills are mostly the result of accidents, breakdown of equipment, natural disasters, acts of war, or illegal dumping. These large spills are devastating to the environment, killing thousands of marine animals, destroying habitats and having huge impacts on local fishing and tourist industries.
That’s where you come in. Yes, you! Your hair, your own hair from your scalp can actually help pick oil from these spills. Want to know how? Watch the full video to learn more.
