Nearly 200 Baby Tortoises Seized in Galapagos After Smuggling Attempt

Nearly 200 baby tortoises were seized at an airport in the Galapagos after a police officer allegedly tried to smuggle them.

185 baby Galapagos tortoises, wrapped in plastic and packed in a suitcase, were seized at an airport in the Galapagos before they were able to make it to Ecuador.

10 of the tortoises, which were estimated to be approximately 3 months old, were found dead. The remaining tortoises were transferred to a breeding center for veterinary care.
