Ocean Sole's sculptures, made from discarded flip-flops, help clean up marine ecosystems where flip-flops have contributed to plastic pollution.
Artists collect old flip-flops from the beach, wash them, and combine them into blocks. They're then carved into a variety of shapes. Flip-flops, which are generally made from plastics, tend to have their biggest markets in low-income countries.
But when discarded, they get washed away to sea, harming marine life. Ocean Sole recycled approximately 750,000 used flip-flops in 2020 and plans to continue raising awareness for wildlife conservation.
