Coca-Cola Brings Back 1985 Recipe for 'New Coke' in Honor of 'Stranger Things'

Coca-Cola is reviving a failed ‘80s soda in honor of “Stranger Things.”

The show’s new season takes place in 1985, the same year Coca-Cola debuted a new recipe called “New Coke.” The product flopped and Coca-Cola pulled if from shelves after only a few months.

Coca-Cola has produced less than 500,000 “New Coke” cans. You can get a retro can in three different ways. First, you can get them as a gift when you buy limited-edition bottles on Coke’s website. You can also win them in a giveaway when you buy a ticket at the World of Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta. You can finally get them through a “Stranger Things” pop-up vending machine that will appear in select cities during summer 2019.

Coca-Cola see the partnership as an opportunity to reach its audience.

“Buying a 30-second ad to drop into a certain time frame is not as valuable as it once way,” Coca-Cola SVP of Marketing Stuart Kronauge told CNN Business. “The world is changing into streaming and non-ad platforms and subscription-based platforms. So it’s important for us to make sure that we are where out consumers’ eyeballs and hearts and spirits are.”

Season 3 of “Stranger Things” starts streaming on Netflix July 4, 2019.
