There are plenty of health trends online, ranging from peculiar to flat-out ridiculous. In some cases, trying out these can actually have positive effects, granted that they’re safe. But this particular trend is probably something you should steer clear of.
People are drinking hydrogen peroxide and it’s really dangerous. There are many videos online promoting the consumption of hydrogen peroxide, saying it can treat allergies, arthritis, diabetes, and more. However, none of these claims are based off of actual science.
Most of the videos use a type of hydrogen peroxide that is super strong. It’s then diluted with water. It’s called food grade hydrogen peroxide — but it’s still not made for drinking. It has 35% hydrogen peroxide, whereas the typical household hydrogen peroxide only has 3%, and is mostly used as an antiseptic to treat minor wounds.
Drinking higher concentrations of the stuff can lead to burns and other serious health issues — some people have even died.
If you accidentally swallow a little hydrogen peroxide, poison control says you will probably be fine, though you might have a foaming mouth and stomach, which could cause a stomach ache. So, you definitely shouldn’t drink it regardless of the hype you hear online.
