Oat meat is the newest way to have vegan pulled pork.
This “meat” has more protein than chicken or steak with 30 grams of protein to every 3.5 ounces of oat meat — and less fat. It’s called "Pulled Oats" but doesn’t taste like oatmeal. It has a mild and tender taste and will soak up the flavors of whatever you cook. It’s juicy, chewy and gets crispy when you fry it.
The special fake meat is made from oats, faba beans and yellow peas and is 100% vegan. The fibers of the oats are stretched to get the right texture by mixing, pressing and heating. It’s made by a company in Finland called Gold & Green Foods. It was served at SXSW in Texas recently and 94% of people who tried it liked it, but only 22% of these people were meat-lovers.
The pulled oats come in tomato, ginger and, nude flavor. Right now, you can only buy it at grocery stores in Finland and Sweden so if you want some realistic-looking fake meat, you’ll have to travel a little way for it. But it could be worth it — pulled pork sandwiches are pretty magical, so if you replicate them without using meat, that’s a feat.
