These Penis-Shaped Sea Worms Are Eaten Raw

These penis-shaped sea creatures are eaten raw and still wiggling on the plate.

This “penis fish” is sweet and chewy. It apparently tastes like the sea, but isn’t too fishy — similar to the taste of clams.

It’s actually not even a fish, but rather a marine spoon warm that just happens to look a distinct part of the male anatomy. It’s typically eaten in Korea, and is called Gaebul in Korean. People dig up Gaebul on mudflats on the Korean coast. The bigger and plumper the worm, the better.

Chefs usually cut each end of the animal while they’re still alive, then they squeeze out the intestines and clean it. It’s then chopped up into pieces before serving, so it doesn’t look like it’s usual super-phallic self when you eat it. Since it’s prepared fresh, it’s usually still moving around on the plate when it’s served.

It’s usually dipped in a sauce of vinegar and Korean chili paste, but sometimes it’s grilled with salt, pepper and sesame oil seasoning. Some some say it’s an aphrodisiac…for obvious reasons. So if you’re an adventurous eater and get a kick out of eating interestingly-shaped foods, then book your flight to Korea and try out these peculiar worms.
