This ice cream is so spicy, you need to sign a waiver to eat it. It’s called Respiro Diavolo and it’s made with chili peppers that or 500 times hotter than tabasco, called Carolina Reapers. To eat the ice cream, you have to be 18 years or older — you also have to sign a waiver acknowledging “a risk of personal injury, illness and possible loss of life.”
It comes in at 1,569,300 SHU on the Scoville scale, which measures the spicy heat of chili peppers. The staff also need to wear cloves to protect themselves from it — after all, its name literally stands for “breath of the devil.” It’s sold at an ice cream shop in Glasgow called the Aldwych café. The name devil’s breath comes from a bridge in Italy called the Devil’s Bridge. Ice cream makers would meet at the bridge to reconnect. If anybody was brave enough, they would eat the ice cream.
The owners say the recipe was passed down through generations and claim that the chili is an aphrodisiac, which might explain why this ice cream is a Valentine’s Day promotion. So, if you love spicy food and really want to impress your Valentines date, head in for this spicy dessert.
