The Sega Genesis Is Back In Miniature Form

Sega is releasing a retro mini console loaded with games.

The video game developer announced that it’s releasing the Mega Drive Mini, a miniature version of the Sega Mega Drive (a.k.a. the Sega Genesis). Much like Nintendo’s SNES Classic, it’ll come preloaded with a number of classic Sega games.

No games have been confirmed yet, but some of the titles that are in the running include “Comix Zone,” “Golden Axe,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Virtua Fighter 2,” “Streets of Rage,” and “Crack Down.” The announcement comes on the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Mega Drive in 1988.

According to TechCrunch, “Sega turned to AtGames to build the hardware. AtGames had previously built the shoddy Sega Genesis Flashback, so hopefully this system will be better than that version. Nintendo paid attention to the details in its retro systems — and it showed. The mini NES and SNES are lovely throwbacks that bring the best of the past to the present — [we] just wish the controllers had longer cords.”

Sega has dabbled with mini consoles in the past, but the Mega Drive Mini will bring a different crop of games. This means that new and old gamers alike can enjoy the console.
