There are plenty of great scenically-driven developments that could help people with cancer treat it more effectively. New trials are being created constantly that alter cells, and try to galvanize your immune system against the disease. They’re even engineering a type of Superblood” might be able to treat conditions like cancer. Startup Rubius Therapeutics is producing red blood cells that can help treat specific conditions in patients. The so-called “superblood” contains therapeutic proteins. When the blood is infused into a patient, the blood cells’ goal is then to reengineer the body’s immune system. Traditional cell based therapies alter white blood cells so they can target cancer cells and kill them. The newly engineered cells are then sent back and injected into a patient. However, Rubius Theraputics is using red blood cells so that they don’t need to engineer personalized doses and instead could administer treatments to patients sharing similar blood types.
Rubius therapeutics is also working in enzyme replacement therapies so the superblood can treat people who can’t produce enzymes and help with their rare conditions. The company raised $120 million this year after a successful fundraiser for $100 million in 2017, making it possible for superblood to be your next treatment.
