Trump is slapping a 30% tax on imported solar panels. The president believes that the tariff will increase competition with China — the largest solar energy producer in the world — and revive the U.S. solar industry.
Suniva and Solarworld Americas, the two foreign companies that proposed the tariff claim that it will create 100,000 jobs.
“This is a step forward for this high-tech solar manufacturing industry we pioneered right here in America.” Suniva claimed in a recent statement.
But many believe that this tariff will actually increase prices for green energy initiatives in the country and hurt the industry overall.
“Unfortunately, with these tariffs on solar, utilities may choose other energy options, placing the jobs of manufacturers and contractors who build, maintain and frame these projects, at risk.” Energy Trade Coalition said in a statement.
In reality, the tariff might kill 23,000 jobs and this has obviously upset the clean energy community — even right-wing free-market advocates are scratching their heads.
The new tariff will fall to 25% after a year, and keep dropping by 5% each year until it’s phased out entirely. With Trump’s views on climate change and global warming, one can’t help but see these tariffs as a bit conniving.
