American Medical Association: 1 in 16 Women Said Their First Time Having Sex Was Rape

One in 16 women said their first time having sex was rape.

The Journal of the American Medical Association released a study that surveyed 13,310 women in the U.S. aged 18-44. 6.6% of those women said their first time having sex was “forced” on them. This data equates to approximately 3.3 million women nationwide.

“Quite honestly, that’s the tip of the iceberg,” Harvard Medical School fellow Dr. Laura Hawks stated.

The study linked a traumatic first sexual experience to higher rates of abortion and menstrual problems. Survivors also reported higher rates of mental health problems. Women of color and women in poverty reported higher rates of forced sex. 39% said they were assaulted between 15-17 years old.
