12-Year-Old Girl Scout Calls Out Sexism

A Girl Scout wrote her local paper to call out sexism.

12-year-old Julianne Speyer had some critiques for the announcer at a recent 4th of July parade.

“The announcer labeled the Boy Scouts “future leaders of America” and he said the Girl Scouts were “just having fun,” she said in letter. “I would appreciate it if you would help me to let other people know how much this kind of thing happens and how bad it is. I feel it is an insult to both girls and women of all ages. This kind of thing happens way too much and it is not OK at all.”

The newspaper clipping has since been shared and praised by plenty of celebrities. The Girls Scouts of America also said that Julianne is repping them well, stating on Twitter, “Let it be known — Girl Scouts ARE America’s leaders! In true Girl scout style, Julianne spoke out against an injustice and raised her voice to lead change. This is what the #GIRLagenda is all about!”

One inspired woman even started a GoFundMe to raise money for Julianne’s Girl scout chapter in NE Ohio. So far, they’re raised nearly $1,000 for the girls.

The Girl Scout says she hopes her letter makes people rethink their words, explaining “I have always been taught that if you think something is unjust, change it. So, this is how I am making a change.”
