Cavanaugh Quick Created Rape Kit Tutorial To Help Survivors

Cavanaugh Quick created a rape kit tutorial to help survivors of sexual assault through the process.

Quick is a rape crisis hotline supervisor as well as a sex educator at O.school, an online sex education school with lives treamed workshops. They identify as a queer, trans, Afrolatinx who uses the pronoun “they.” They are also a social worker, focusing on queer and trans-centered sex therapy, and provide hospital accompaniment for survivors of sexual assault.

“It’s really hard to get this information other places. Right? I had to go through hours upon hours upon hours of training and then after that I started writing the training modules,” Quick stated in an O.school video. “So, I have this information because my job is to know that other people are getting it.”

In 2013, the Violence Against Women Act provided women with free sexual assault forensic exams. Until then, survivors had to pay upwards of $1,000 upfront to get tested, then get reimbursed later. To help further empower victims through exams, onward, Quick is encouraging survivors to learn their rights to create a setting they are comfortable with, and plans to continue live streaming on rape kits once a month.

“You have the right to say, no, I don’t want to talk to a victim’s advocate. No, I don’t want to have an exam. No, I don’t want to talk to the social worker right now,” they explained. “Your body, your space, your examination, your decision.”
