Cecile Richards announced that she plans to step down as president of Planned Parenthood.
She stated, “I am announcing that I will be stepping down from my position of Planned Parenthood this year. This last year has been one of the most inspiring of my life, as long-time staff and supports marched and rallied alongside brand new activists. Planned Parenthood has helped tens of millions take control of their health and their futures by providing birth control, Pap smears, breast exams, STI testing and treatment, and safe and legal abortion. This is one of the most important public health success stories in history, and it would not have been possible without the life-changing and life-saving work of Planned Parenthood. It has been an incredible honor to be a part of this organization, as a patient, as president, and now as a lifelong supporter and champion. I will always be committed to the goals we share. Thank you for supporting me through the years and for carrying on this important work.”
Richards will be meeting with the organizers board to discuss her end date as well as a replacement. She also stated she would continue to support efforts of the Democratic party for the upcoming midterm elections.
