Chelsea Manning is Running for Senate

Chelsea Manning is running for U.S. Senate. The whistleblower, who was sentenced to 35 years in prison, is running as a Democrat in Maryland. If she wins, she would be the first transgender U.S. senator in history.

“We need someone willing to fight. We need to stop asking them to give us our rights, they won’t support us.” Manning stated.

She became a controversial figure, when she leaked more than 720,000 military documents with sensitive info on the war in Iraq. This included footage of military airstrikes that killed civilians.

The classified documents were published on WikiLeaks and Manning was sentences to 35 years in prison. President Obama commuted her sentence three days before he left office, so she only had to serve six years.

The 30-year-old is now one of hundreds of women running for office in 2018.

“We don’t need them anymore we can do better. You’re damn right we got this.”
