Comedian John Oliver Creates Vanned Parenthood

Comedian John Oliver started his own crisis pregnancy center (CPC) to show what anti-abortion organizations can get away with.

The “Last Week Tonight” host created “Vanned Parenthood” to show how easy it is for religious groups (including the fake megachurch he created last year) to create centers that deceptively steer women away from abortions.

Oliver’s main story that night was on abortion access and he accused CPC’s of inflicting “emotional manipulation,” by misleading pregnant women who are seeking health care options, including abortions.

“We filed paperwork in New York to create a new nonprofit, ‘Our Lady of Choosing Choice’ to set up our own crisis pregnancy center,” he explained on the show. “The tactics that CPCs often use are disingenuous and predatory, and it is absolutely critical that people understand that.”

Oliver also pointed out CPCs outnumber abortion providers — there are 2,752 CPCs in the U.S., but approximately 1,800 facilities that provide abortions.

As part of his fake spectacle, he invited his fake wife Wanda (played by SNL alumni Rachel Dratch) to help present Vanned Parenthood. He then ended the segment urging more regulations on tax-exempt CPCs and abortion clinic harassment. Hopefully, his stunt will encourage more people to speak out against these misleading and dangerous clinics.
