Student Elin Ersson Stopped The Deportation Of Asylum Seeker From Afghanistan

Elin Ersson’s protest stopped the deportation of an asylum seeker.

Ersson staged a protest on board her flight from Gotherburg to Istanbul. She is a social work student at Gothenburg University who has volunteered for refugee group in the past year.

Approximately 1,500 asylum seekers have been seeking refuge in Sweden each month. Most migrants are escaping danger in Middle Eastern countries. In 2017, the government rejected more than half its applications for asylum.

Ersson livestreamed her stance against Sweden’s tough asylum laws, which made some flight staff and passengers angry.
“I’m not going to sit down until this person is off the plane. Because he will most likely get killed if he is on this plane when it goes up,” she stated in the video.

But some passengers on the plane showed support, as well as people in other countries.

@REPTILLACUS tweeted, “What a wonderful young woman! And a real inspiration in an age of anger and cowardice.”

@CAROLINELUCAS tweeted, “If ever you think one person can’t make a difference then watch this! Huge respect to Elin Ersson, a student at Gothenburg university, for _ literally _standing up for what she believes in. A true inspiration.”

Ersson was taken off the plane but not charged with any crimes yet. A prison official reportedly said the government still plans to deport the man.
