Lili Bernard, one of Bill Cosby’s many accusers, gave a moving speech after he was found guilty in his sexual assault retrial. Bernard alleges she was raped by Cosby in the early ‘90’s.
“I stand here in the spirit of Martin Luther King, who said the arc of the moral universe is long, but today it has bent towards justice,” she stated. “Last year, when I was sitting in the courtroom of the first trial , and the verdict was hung, I left with such a tremendous sense of disappointment, and it became evident to me that the justice system is light-years behind modern culture.”
Cosby’s case involved former Temple employee Andrea Constand, who accused him of drugging and raping her in 2004. More than 50 women have also accused Cosby of sexual misconduct.
Attorney Gloria Allred also spoke post-verdict, stating. “We are so happy that finally we can say women are believed and not only on #MeToo, but in a court of law, where they were under oath, where they testified truthfully, where they were attacked, where they were smeared, where they were denigrated, where there were attempts to discredit them. And after all is said and done, women were finally believed.”
