Miss Iraq got death threats for posing with Miss Israel — but the Miss Universe contestants didn’t let that stop their friendship. The two just reunited in Jerusalem and posted photos despite the backlash they received. They even had dinner at an Iraqi-Jewish restaurant.
Sarah Idan competed as Miss Iraq in the November 2017 Miss universe Pageant, where she met Adar Gandelsman, who competed as Miss Israel. Idan posted a photo of the women together and woke up to death threats. Apparently, some people took the photo as a sign that Idan didn’t support Palestinian people’s fight for liberation, and would rather endorse the Israeli government.
But Idan refused to take the photo down and responded to the backlash online, stating, “I would like to apologize to anyone who considered the photo to be offensive to the Palestinian cause as this was not the aim behind the post, it was merely a call to peace and hope for a solution to the crisis.”
Idan and her family received so many death threats, they had to be relocated out of Iraq. But she and Adar stayed friends and reunited in Jerusalem for a magazine photoshoot. Though Idan is still receiving hate online, she is also getting plenty of praise from fans — as well as a spokesman for the Israeli government.
