The Mississippi House voted to ban abortions after 15 weeks.
“This legislation is not about whether or not children’s lives are precious, my logic is that this is about you all trying to control what takes place in someone else’s household.” Adrinne Wooten, a Democratic Representative, stated.
Republicans and some Democrats passed a bill, making abortions illegal past 15 weeks. If the bill makes it to law, Mississippi would have the toughest restrictions in the U.S. The state has already banned abortions 20 weeks after a woman’s last period.
Several lawmakers called out the bill’s supporters, for caring more about a fetus than actual children. 34% of Mississippi children live in poverty and the state ranks 50th in overall child well-being. 15 weeks is a particularly short window of time to get an abortion, considering many women might not know they are pregnant until several weeks in. The bill passed 79-30 in the House, but we’ll have to wait and see if it becomes law.
