Activist Monica Jones Wants Rights For Sex Workers For International Whores' Day

Sex workers are demanding protection and rights by fighting new laws that put them in danger — just in time for International Whore’s Day

“To the government, I really want you guys to keep your laws off my body, because your morals are not my morals,” activist and sex worker Monica Jones explained.

80% of the world’s sex workers are women so these laws have to do with women’s rights.

“It’s about the control over one’s own body, the control over one’s own commerce, and it’s about keeping women and all sex workers safe,” explained sex worker and activist Yin Q.

Sex work advocates in the U.S. like Jones and Q are celebrating the first National Day of Action and Lobbying on Behalf of Sex Workers’ Rights on June 1, followed by International Sex Workers’ Day on June 2.

Events across the U.S. will promote sex workers’ rights and urging Congress to revoke a package of bills passed, known as Sesta-Fosta, which were drafted to fight online sex trafficking by penalizing websites that advertise prostitution. But sex workers say the law puts their lives in danger by forcing them to find work through pimps on the street, where they are more likely to face abuse.

Sex workers are urging lawmakers to decriminalize sex work and provide basic human rights for them.
