Adina Miles is an Orthodox Jewish influencer known as Flatbush Girl. She pushes the boundaries of her conservative community with satirical posts addressing women’s issues within it.
“We’re seeing a lot of females who are using social media to kind of break out of the shackles of the patriarchy,” she explained. “It’s about creating a safe space for girls and women to assess their lives and deconstruct it, so that whatever we do, we do it with meaning and purpose and feeling present in our daily lives.”
Miles began opening up discussions on women’s issues in her community to provide women like her a space to address some of their concerns.
“So many people who aren’t comfortable speaking convert. So many people who aren’t comfortable within the spaces just feel so isolated and it can lead to mental health issues and it could lead to substance abuse. It can lead to depression, it could even lead to suicide,” she explained.
Many of Miles’ videos discuss expectations of Orthodox women, such as dressing conservatively and covering their hair. She also decided to use her growing platform to run for office and became the Democratic candidate for Flatbush District Leader.
