The rape and murder of this 8-year-old girl is causing unrest in India.
Police say Asifa Bano was drugged, held captive and gang raped for several days. Her strangled body was found January 2018.
Asifa was part of a nomadic tribe in Kashmir Valley. Authorities say the accused men assaulted Asifa to try and run her community out of the Jammu region. protests defending the rapists have emerged in India and people are expressing their outrage on Twitter with #JusticeForAsifa.
Deepika Singh Rajawat, who is representing Asifa’s family in court has received threats and verbal abuse since taking the case, stating, “I was in the court when Jammu Bar president BS Salathia passed by and said that I should not appear. I politely replied that I am not the Bar member and have important cases listed. He is a seasoned lawyer and needs to hold his thoughts and tongue. Later he said, ‘If you will appear, we know how to stop you.’”
Rajawat requested security to appear for the cases. She says she will continue fighting against brutal crimes against women and children in India. Meanwhile, the case has attracted international attention, with many people expressing their outrage on Twitter.
