This clothing company featured a sweatshirt with a fat-shaming quote.
Revolve posted a sweatshirt for sale that read, “Being Fat Is Not Beautiful It’s An Excuse.” In smaller print below, it read, “as said to Paloma Elsesser,” a plus size model.
Before people were given an explanation, the internet went wild with criticism and boycott threats.
@okayhailey tweeted, “I have struggled with self love my entire life because of how I look and this is the most disgusting shirt I’ve ever seen @REVOLVE how is this okay how is it okay to make people feel the way I did seeing this shirt.”
But some women used the controversy as an opportunity to flaunt their own curves.
@imsarahconley tweeted, “Since @REVOLVE clearly needs an education, I’m here to show them that you can be #FatANDBeautiful I am every single day and so are you.”
The sweatshirt was part of a collection by designer Pia Arrobio, who later explained the shirts were meant to “shine light on how horrible trolling is.” The line featured quotes said to five famous women, including Lena Dunham and Cara Delevingne — and proceeds were planned to benefit charity.
Revolve says it has removed the sweatshirt from its online store.
