This video of a woman being beaten by her husband went viral online, and her death sparked an international conversation on domestic violence.
“One of the top reasons why people don’t look for help is because they feel ashamed,” explained psychologist Jéssica Belo. “You have to be more open to listening, without judging, to be in a position to help.”
Luís Felipe Manvailer was captured assaulting his wife Tatiane Spitzner on surveillance video from their apartment building in Brazil. The footage also shows Spitzner falling to her death from the couple’s apartment balcony. The video was broadcast on local news and spread online, launching a social media campaign in support of Brazilian women.
The campaign uses #metaAcolher (#StickASpoonInIt) encouraging the rejection of a dangerous Brazilian phrase that discourages people from intervening in domestic dispute.
Brazil has some of the highest rates of femicide, or the killing of a woman or girl in connection to her gender. One of three Brazilian women report being a victim of violence and more than half of their attackers are intimate partners.
“Through support inside the family and friends, justice and professionals, this person will build courage to get out of that situation,” stated Belo.
