This Abortion Provider Wants To Help NYC's Most Vulnerable Women

Dr. Treasure Walker is an abortion provider in New York — she’s also eight months pregnant.

“I’m very lucky to be able to do this at a time that I want to, recognizing that some of my patients don’t have that option,” she stated, “It’s very much affirmed by belief in being able to choose what you want to do with your reproductive life for yourself because pregnancy is not easy and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone who didn’t want to be.”

This year, states like Iowa and Kentucky have passed highly restrictive abortion laws banning abortions as early as six weeks into pregnancy. A study from the Center of Reproductive Rights shows, in states with the strictest abortion laws, women’s health is often worse.

“If we can prevent pregnancy for these women who don’t want to be pregnant, we can hopefully reduce the maternal mortality rate,” Walked explained. “[Abortion is] very common and it’s very safe in this country. As long as we continue to protect our ability to get safe access, it will remain safe."

She encourages women who feel comfortable to talk about their experiences to debunk some misconceptions about the procedure and help get more people educated on the matter.
