The new refrigerators on Air Force One will cost $24 million (in taxpayer money.) According to the Defense Department, the Boeing company was given a $24 million contract in December to get the job done. The $24 million will cover the cost of engineering, manufacturing and testing new refrigerators.
The two units were installed over 25 years ago and came with the plane in 1990. The sudden overhaul was because Air Force One has to be able to feed passengers and crew for weeks without resupplying, which means about 3,000 meals must be stored in the plane’s refrigerators and freezers, the new units will provide about 70 feet of cool storage.
The fancy fridges should be done by October 2019. The trump administration has been criticized in the past for frivolous spending regarding Air Force One — though this seems like all that money could actually be going to a slightly meaningful cause.
