“Black Panther” just sunk “Titanic’s” box office record, making it the 3rd highest-grossing film ever. It’s now the 3rd highest-grossing film ever in North America.
The movie has now made $665.4 million domestically, and about $1.3 billion worldwide. Titanic made $659.5 million. “Black Panther” is only behind 2 other big blockbusters — “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “Avatar.”
Back in the day, “Titanic” claimed the number one spot box office spot. It sat there for decades but was bumped off the list by James Cameron’s fantastal flick “Avatar.” This was then bumped to #2 by “The Force Awakens,” which grossed $936.7 million.
“Black Panther” has been breaking record after record since it was released in February 2018. It’s the highest-rated Marvel movie of all time according to rotten tomatoes. It’s also the highest-grossing film by a black director and the biggest opening by a film with a black main character. After making $192 million in 3 days, it also blew past the biggest February opening weekend record, which was previously held by “Deadpool,” which made $152 million in 4 days. With its amazing cultural allusions, eclectic talented cast and amazing costuming, the film’s success is also showing how successful less traditional-looking superhero movies can be.
