Chrissy Teigen and other activists want people to cancel gym memberships at Equinox and SoulCycle because the owner of the gyms fundraises for Trump.
“A lot of my very cool, socially aware, progressive, awesome, amazing friends are members of Equinox of Soulcycle,” Teigan stated. “And I just want to let you know that their owner is hosting a giant Trump fundraiser.”
Teigen is among several major figures who have encouraged people boycott Equinox Fitness and its subsidiary brands, including SoulCycle and Blink. The protests follow a Washington Post report that first revealed brand owner and real estate developer Stephen Ross will host a Trump fundraiser luncheon at his Southampton home on August 9, 2019.
Tickets to the event range from $5,600 to $250,000. Guests can pay up to $100,000 for a picture with Trump and $250,000 to join a roundtable discussion.
Many said they canceled their Equinox memberships in response.
A spokesperson for Equinox and SoulCycle says Ross is a “passive investor” of both businesses. Additional statements claim both brands are not associated with the event and do not support it.
“At SoulCycle, we wake up every day committed to our community, and creating a safe space where all are welcome,” SoulCycle CEO Melanie Whelan said in an official statement. “We believe in diversity, inclusion and equality…we’ll always stay true to our values and committed to our community.”
