Super Mario is officially getting an animated movie What’s more is that the Italian plumber’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, is co-producing the movie and Illumination Entertainment will animate it. If you’re unfamiliar, they’re the guys that brought minions to the big screen.
Nintendo confirmed the news on Twitter, saying, “Nintendo and Illumination are partnering on a movie starring Mario, co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri!”
Universal Pictures will be distributing the currently unnamed movie, which will likely tie into their plans for Nintendo-themed attractions at the Universal Studios theme parks. There isn’t a release date for the project yet, but Nintendo has wanted to make animated movies since 2015. Considering what happened with the last Mario movie (which was a life action dystopian nightmare) they’re probably eager to make movie that stays true to the celebrated aesthetic.
The company actually has a lot on the line with this project, so here’s hoping it’s as awesome as the video games.
