What Makes a Pixar Sequel Good?

‘The Incredibles 2’ is the latest in a string of spectacular Pixar sequels, and Dev Allen is here with a look at what makes their follow-ups so fantastic.

The Incredibles 2 is the long-awaited follow-up to The Incredibles movie by director Brad Bird. Superheroes, Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Violet, Jack Jack, Violet, Frozone, and Edna Mode have all returned from the first Incredibles. And from what we’ve seen in every Incredibles 2 trailer so far, it’s looking like another in a string of spectacular Pixar sequels.

Some of the best Pixar movies in the history of animation have been a sequel, and the Incredibles 2 looks no different. From Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Finding Dory, the Pixar sequel to Finding Nemo, Monsters U, the sequel to Monsters Inc., and rare exceptions like Cars 2 and Cars 3, Pixar’s track record with sequels is second to none — and the Incredibles 2018 looks like it will keep the tradition going strong. So, what exactly makes a good sequel? There’s plenty that can go wrong, especially if directors and writers rely on too many jokes from the original. But Pixar has a talent for truly enjoyable sequels — watch to see how they manage it.
