Why Marvel Needs a Fresh Start

Marvel comics recently did a huge relaunch — but it has been one of many. May 2018’s fresh start is one of many reboot attempts the company has had. But, Marvel could actually benefit from a bit of a restart.

The company has never really been that successful at translating the success of their cinematic endeavors into their comics. Marvel’s top-selling book only moved about 300,000 copies the entire year. Meanwhile, the “Black Panther” movie made $400,000,000 in four days. Super heroes haven’t been this popular since the 40s but people still aren’t buying comics.

On 2012, Marvel rebooted their entire publishing line — they debuted a bunch of new characters with fresh new shorty lines. They did also go out of their way to highlight a bunch of new diverse heroes like America Chavez. This was met with criticism because some people just preferred the characters they grew up with. They later rebooted again to highlight the classics.

But all this rebooting also gives opportunity for more fresh faces on the comic scene. A shift in some big names in the company means that new ideas will start flowing and that, maybe, Marvel will come up with a revamp that will stick.
