2018 was the worst year for gun violence in schools on record.
At least 94 instances of gun violence have occurred so far in 2018 in K-12 schools. According to research by the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, it is the most ever on record. The number is more than double that of 2017 and approximately a 60% increase from the previous record in 2006, which had 59 instances.
The reporting, which dates back to 1970, records any incident when a gun is brandished, fired, “or a bullet hits school property.”
Reporting from the Washington Post found that approximately 68 people were killed in mass shootings so far this year.
17 people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February and 10 students and teachers were killed in Santa Fe School in Texas in May. Another 12 were killed at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California on November 7.
