86 migrants were recently rescued by Italy’s coast guard. The migrants were crossing the sea from Libya to Italy and were found on a smuggler’s punctured rubber dinghy. At least eight died before the rescue.
They were spotted by a plane patrolling the sea. Hundreds of thousands of migrants have fled trying to reach Europe and this particular vessel had about 100 passengers when it initially set sail. The fleeing is due to economic, political and environmental strife in their home country.
More than 3,100 migrants died making the crossing in 2017. The International Organization For Migration has called the Mediterranean the “World’s Deadliest Border,” with more than 33,000 migrants dying at sea since 2000.
